RTC2309A : Operate Tractors
Course Description :
This competency standard covers the process of operating tractors with or without attached equipment. Tractors can be used for a large variety of operations including tillage, sowing, harvesting and for towing chaser bins.
Tractors are the major cause of farm injuries in Australia thus this unit has a particular focus on safety.
In this competency participants will develop the skills to safely utilise the various components of a tractor, including but not limited to, the drawbar, three point hitch and the controls. Participants will also learn how to check and confirm operational status and set and secure the equipment for operation, such as ploughs.
There is a large variation in types of tractors. This unit is based on modern John Deere tractors which have advanced controls and operations. The underlying principles however are transferable to any tractor even if some of the controls are specific to newer models.
To achieve competency in this unit participants must demonstrate that they:
- understand the safety hazards and rules relating to tractors
- know and can carry out necessary pre-operational checks
- operate a tractor in forward and reverse, with or without an implement attached
- safely attach/detach and adjust various types of implements
- recognise all the controls and can diagnose possible causes of mechanical or operational problems that arise when operating the tractor
